Taronga have an amazing year coming up.

They have a little baby elephant arriving in April/May to Pak Boon and Gung to increase their current herd.

They will be opening the amazing children's wild theatre near the chimps and also the Sumatran village construction featuring their majestic tigers.

Does anyone know what month the new Tiger exhibit will be publicly opened?

I'm hoping it is a good exhibit, but it is a bit worrying that so far only Sumatran tigers have been confirmed (no mention of any aviaries or vivariums which would be nice additions). Otherwise it would seem like a big wasted potential to include other south-east Asian species, especially as lions and snow leopards had to leave the zoo to accommodate the new area.

Just discovered on the Taronga website that the orang-utans will be leaving this year to move to Mogo Zoo.

Seems like Orana's enclosure is to good for hydrides orangs. They will import pure bred Sumatrans to be exhibited their.Great news to see an expansion
for an unused exhibit. This another loss of a great specie at the zoo.Hoppfully they can import and start a pure bred Sumatran group.

They are both hybrids. Willow (F) born 1985 to Wendy; Jantan (M) born 1987 to Judy II.

Any future plans to go into Sumatran as per the regional conservation breeding plan?

Not at the moment. But as more and more zoos in Aus are phasing out Borneans and getting Sumatrans it's likely they'll get some too.

Surely there are no Borneans in Australia now, and haven't been for a long time? (Unless any of Auckland's came to OZ).

There are currently no pure-bred Borneans but there are still hydrides.Jantan and Willow who are now 30 and 31 have another 15-20 years to live which will leave Aus with hybrids for at least that long unless they get exported which is very unlikely out of Aus.Melbourne also have hydrids Kiani (suma) and her daughter Gabby (Kamil).Gabby is around the same age as Jantan an Willow and Kiani is 38.New Zealand's Borneans will soon be moving out as part of Aucklands long term plan Sumatrans will be imported in 2018.Mid this year the Borneans will either be exported to Mogo to join Jantan and Willow (which I think is the best option to have a group of five) or to the states as where 6 of their orangs have already gone in 2009 and 2015.
