1.0 Red Panda has recently arrived from Hamilton Tasmania Zoo's new red panda Tenzing set to steal hearts
That’s a really interesting story I didn’t know about Tenzing: Tenzing was actually supplement fed," Ms Penney said. "He has a twin sister who was much bigger, and because they were competing for the mother's milk, he was fed by the keepers from six weeks old over at Hamilton Zoo. "He then became quite friendly through that regular contact with the keepers." Tenzing’s parents (Chito and Tayla) produced nine cubs (eight surviving), starting with male twins in December 2011. One of those died around two months of age; so maybe from then on, they took the initiative to supplement feed if necessary. It was done for their December 2012 litter (male triplets). Most of Chito and Tayla’s eight offspring have now bred. Only Jamuna (born January 2015) remains at Hamilton Zoo now.
That’s great news! Hopefully Tenzing will be paired up with Mandu (arrived from Melbourne zoo 2017). It would be quite exciting for Tasmania if they do breed. Great for the regional breeding program!
Tasmania Zoo has received bilby. The two females are currently Tasmania’s only bilbies. Easter comes early with Tasmania Zoo bilby arrivals
Excellent news! Tasmania Zoo now has caracals! The zoo received two 7-month-old sisters from South Africa. Caracals at Tasmania Zoo, an Australian first An interesting quote from the article: “Ms Penney said other zoos across the country were coming onboard with the species, and hoped that in the future there would be an opportunity to send Magic and Mystique to another zoo to breed”.
It also said that the Tasmania Zoo “ is the only zoo in the country to have Caracal.” Doesn’t Wild Animal Encounters have them as well?
Yes, as far as I know they have an unrelated pair - Kato and Kaia (both born 2017). It must have been an error. The only other Caracal in the region are two sisters at Wellington Zoo, Tinka and Jasiri (born 2013).
A new species for the zoo. Tasmania Zoo has received three Golden Lion Tamarins (3.0) from Mogo Zoo. Santa brings three new monkeys to Tasmania Zoo
It was mentioned at one of the keeper talks that the Darling Downs zoo also was interested in obtaining Caracals!
