Flemming Nielsen, the Curator of Copenhagen has been approved by EAZA for the role of Tasmanian Devil studbook co-ordinator. The first time such a role has been created outside Australia http://www.zoo.dk/BesogZoo/Nyhedsarkiv/2013/December/Zoo bliver djaevlenes advokat.aspx
I just happened across the following article from last month. How many devils are at Copenhagen now -- the four adults and seven young, or did not all survive? Worth pointing out that the current exports of devils to NZ and the USA are a test run to see how it goes, and then if it goes well the number will be ramped up to include many more zoos in Europe, the USA and Asia. As far as I know, all these animals will basically be excess animals from the real breeding programme in Australia to free up room for breeders. This year late moving tasmanian devil in copenhagen zoo to the new exibith behind the tropic zoo and there zoo bulit new exibith for tasmanian animals like kangaroo spices (thre differents kangaroos) and wombat and tasmanian devil. the old exibith builds to an african animals but know zoo dont know how animal.
More importantly, it is described as a second-generation breeding - in other words, the parent animals are presumably among the individuals born in 2013 This is hopefully the first step towards seeing the species spread to other European collections.
Would be great to see them in more zoos and hopefully this time the population can be managed over a much longer time.
strictly speaking born some time ago, likely early or mid December. Devils leave the pouch for the first time about 100-110 days after being born and they first left the pouch in mid March. Regardless, great with more devils. Let's hope the U.S. zoos follow suit soon with some breeding.
