Zoos should make a lot of efforts to ''take'' at least 20-25 founders from this species, for captive breeding. Why they don't start via Africa's zoos first? Their captive keeping should be easy since they are smaller than African bush or Asian elephants, provided that they will be kept in bigger herds than usual for zoos (for example two groups from 6-8 members in 2 capacious (wast enclosure) zoos, including adequate number of elephant bulls (or like 9-10 from total of 25 founders)). Potential candidates: San Diego Safari Wild Animal Park and White Oak Conservation Centre.
