The Lemur Conservation Network launched globally today. It aims to bring together all those with an interest in lemurs and conservation, regardless of background. Regular updates will be made and they can be followed on Twitter and Facebook. It will feature blogs and news from Madagascar itself and I'm very proud to say I'll be contributing from Howletts and talking about my half-marathon for indris & greater bamboo lemurs. The Network has already undertaken the first ever study into lemurs being kept as pets in Madagascar. Sadly the findings were even worse than feared - an estimated 28'000 are thought to be in the island's homes and hotels. By uniting charities, zoos and organisations from around the world the hope is to give every lemur species the best possible chance of survival.
I believe that the traditional phrase used at a launch is appropriate 'God bless her and all who sail in her'. Alan
