Thrigby Hall Wildlife Gardens Thrigby Saltwater Crocodiles

Happened to be checking something on crocs on ISIS and noticed no Saltwater Crocs listed for Thrigby (updated 5th July)? Is this another ISISism or have they had problems??

 

Didn't it go to Paignton?

There were 3 when I visited Thrigby in May.....1 may have gone to Paignton but what about the others?

 

2 Salties present and correct at Thrigby last weekend. Also 2 Muggers and a whole pile of alligators...

What british zoos keep salties?

 

Just Thrigby and Paignton i`m not aware of any others even in private collections.

 

Fine that Thrigby maintain salties, but why Paignton should ... I can not phantom. These salties are not even a wee bit endangered ... I think they are just a gimmick as known "maneaters". What a sad deal, ay!

 

not very knowlaable about thrigby but do they have a nice enclosure there?

 

Just got back from visit to Thrigby for the first time. Impressed with the crocodile house. Present were 2 muggers; 2 salties; and 5 american alligators. The sign by the muggers said they are joint owned with London and Bristol zoos. Does anybody know any more details about this??

 

Not sure about London Zoo and the muggers; I've never heard of it before, and being quite a unique and rare species, I would've thought I'd know something of it.

And Rachnos, it's spelt Racnoss.

 

They are on long term breeding loan from London and Bristol to Thrigby Hall.

 

Were they ever at London or Bristol?

Not that i can remember but i could be wrong,i only ever remember seeing Niles and Dwarfs at Bristol and as for London my first visit was in 1990 when they had Niles and Chinese Alliagators.

 

I remember seeing a Mugger (perhaps more than one) at the ZSL, in the second enclosure from the left in the section which is viewed from the raised area at the end of the Reptile House. I think this was in the eighties.

In the late 80s thrigby housed at least 3 mugger crocodiles in the old crocodile house with the hog badger (in the opposite enclosure in the house). I think the current cockatoo aviary is on the site of this house. These were the only crocodilians existing in the collection before the swamp house was built. Much was made of their courtship behaviour once installed in the new house, but I don't think it ever resulted in any eggs. I think chinese alligators came soon after, and later non-asiatic species were added to the swamp house. I think the saltwater crocodiles came a few years into the house being opened but I could be wrong.

 

I first visited Thrigby in the late 1990`s and they then kept Mugger,American Alligator,Chinese Alligator and Nile Croc,as far as i can remember the Salt-water Crocs arrived around 2002.At present they keep 1.1 Mugger,6 or 7 American Alligator,1.0 Chinese Alligator(This animal is currently held off-show but may end up going to Rotterdam) and they have 2 Salt-water Crocs,also the Saltie at Paignton is also owned by Thrigby.
