Heres an informative article that describes the history of Toronto zoo's elephant herd and their present situation. The article talks about the early plans for the herd in the 70's and their journey from Europe (along with a black rhino). Also has some neat pictures when the zoo practiced free contact and an image of the bull Tantor (Toka is mislabeled as Tara in this image). There are some other errors in the photo captions identifying certain elephants, Thika is labeled Iringa etc, but overall its really interesting. Have any details of the proposed 40million exhibit been released? I think it better have a GIGANTIC barn are they really thinking about importing from south Africa?
