Agreed Naked mole Rats are very interesting little rodents, in the same sense I feel most rodents (except capybara) do not really get enough love for how unique and diverse they are.
Saiga are much like American Pronghorn. Both do well higher elevation and airid environments. That's why Pronghorn don't do well in eastern zoos.
Thank you for sharing this link. Very, very fascinating read. It reminds me of reading: International Zoo Yearbooks, but greatly expanded n indepth. Wonderful to read applied reseach in captivity. Seen this species at San Diego back in the 80's, surprised yet not surprised saiga were held at Oklahoma too. As Oklahoma also held large collection of ungulates of many species in large enclosures back in the 80's.
I like all animals on Earth, but probably the most unpopular group that I like more are the cockroaches. I admire their diversity and beauty. I like the domestic species too.
I would have to say droneflies, wasps and sawflies. Only recently I have started photographing and studying certain species from these groups quite religiously. This August I spent many, many hours in my meadow just noting down, photographing and reading up on the species that were around me. I discovered many new species which I added to my life list, and introduced plants to encourage them to breed & feed which many did so. Then at the end of the season I went searching for deceased individuals for my insect collection where I found a few in my conservatory perfectly preserved.
I love all species, though I will say that cockroaches do come to mind, just because so many people hat 'em, and I find them adorable!!!
I have a fond memory of watching ring-tailed lemurs all line up "meditating" in the evening sun when late on a visit to zsl london. Maybe I would get bored of them as I visit more zoos, but lemurs have always been one of my favorite animals since then. If we are talking unpopular with the general public, I gotta say isopods. Many memories of playing with them as a child and I still enjoy finding one crawling around.
I highly doubt this fits in the thread, but I just don't really care for the White rhino. It's not a bad animal, no, I just honestly prefer the black rhino and greater one-horned rhino.
You are correct, this does not belong in this thread. It’s called “Unpopular animals that you like” not “Popular animals that you dislike” And I beg to differ. Not that I have a preference, I like all 3 species the same amount but… I do not know if you’ve ever seen a large crash of white rhinos but it’s always really cool to see a large crash with several babies rather than a lone Indian or Black rhino.
I definitely agree. You shouldn't call them "seagulls", though, only haters and "Average Joes/Janes" call them that. If you really like these birds, call them gulls.
Bit of a generalisation, and an inaccurate one plenty of people who do not dislike gulls would nonetheless use the term "seagull" as colloquial shorthand! In any case, the Great Black-backed Gull literally IS officially a seagull
You miss my tongue-in-cheek point the Great Black-backed Gull is literally a seagull, as it is Larus marinus.
if it isnt a pond, lake, river or any freshwater water, it is the sea. It doesnt matter how far out it is. When you are on a beach, an estuarie or any salt water, you are touching the sea.
