On Aug. 28, 1965 the 4 ha large facility was opened. It is the successor of a small school zoo and is now supported by the city of Darmstadt and a private association. The specialities of the small zoo include monkeys, birds, reptiles and amphibians. In 1998 a large animal house with an outdoor enclosure for the highly endangered Crested black macaques (Macaca nigra) was built. In the following years walk-in animal houses for Binturongs, Lowland Tapir and Crocodiles were built. Very interesting is the reptile-amphibian-house with an extensive animal population. In 2018 a large enclosure for flamingos was built. In May 2019 the 2.000 sqm Africa Enclosure was completed. Zebras and Scimitar-horned Antelopes now live here. In June 2019 the Vivarium took over 2 vicugnas from Prague Zoo - on Nov. 5, 2019 the first young animal was born here. The Vivarium Darmstadt has a very special charm and if you visit the famous Frankfurt Zoo and have some time left, you should definitely make a trip to the Vivarium. Darmstadt is only about 40 km away from Frankfurt
