Now it sounds like Klyde wont return from the Sedgewick County Zoo.

 

On October 17 (2013), National Geographic's head wildlife photogapher Nick Nichols will be giving a talk on elephants at the zoo. He is my all time favorite photographer and I would love to hear him in person some day. My zoo's former curator worked with him once (shooting at another zoo) and said he is an excellent speaker.

I was told today at a wedding that one of the new Japanese macaques escaped from Monkey Island but it was immediately recaptured.

Seems the zoo has a new manatee named Abigail.

There were so many changes to the zoo that I probably have forgotten some.

Reptile House
-A Fire Salamander (new species) replaced the Spotted Salamander
-A Long-tailed Salamander (new species) was put in with the Cave Salamander
-The empty former Galapagos tortoise exhibit was finally renovated!! It contains Terciopelos, and Parrot Snakes.
-A Cat-eyed Snake (new species) is now in the Parrot Snake exhibit.
-The Yucatan Neotropical Rattlesnake and Mexican West Coast Rattlers switched places. The whiptail lizards remained in the exhibit (now neotropical exhibit).
-A young Rhinoceros Viper (not new) is now in the old Terciopelo exhibit.

World of the Insect
-A Vietnamese Centipede (new species) replaced the Green June Beetles.
-The Domino Beetles (not new) replaced the Black Stag Beetle.
-Golden Poison Dart Frogs (new species) replaced the Dyeing Dart Frog.
-The Giant Cockroaches replaced the American Burying Beetles.
-The Eastern Lubber Grasshoppers are now in the old Giant Cockroach exhibit.

Dragons!
-The pool and small waterfall in the Crocodile Monitor exhibit was completely filled in with dirt. So now Jasper has more horizontal space and can stretch his body out entirely without bending.

Manatee Springs
-The entrance sign in completely different and is aimed towards children.
-The mixed tropical fish and snail tank was completely renovated. Much of the coral was taken out and a Green Chromis was added to it.
-The Salt Marsh Snake exhibit is being renovated.

Rhino Reserve
-Manjula, the other Indian rhino's horn was cut off.

Jungle Trails
-More info signs were added: How to Survive in the Jungle (By Muller's gibbons), A new Prosimian sign (by ruffed lemurs), and How to Tell Between a Monkey and Ape (by bonobos).
-The Entrance sign was also completely changed.
-Small "Can You Find Me" signs were put up in multiple locations. There is a picture of a small and hidden item on the sign and it is up to the guests to find that particular item. 1. Durian Plant (by orangutans), 2. Cockroaches (by ruffed lemur), 3. Vampire Bats (by Angolan colobus), 4. Snake (by indoor Sifakas).
-The Saddle-billed Storks was not outside nor were they inside.
-At the exit of "African Animals", there are cut out pictures along the wall of various primates.

Wings of the World
-Another new entrance sign was put up.
-The Australasia atrium is temporarily closed so new animals can have their space.
-Another blue-breasted kingfisher replaced the Sugar Gliders. The first kingfisher still remains in it's place.

Sea Lions
-My guess is that Callie is now gone due to the fact that I haven't seen her in pretty much a year.

Children's Zoo
-The nursery is now almost completely empty. Only Lucy the Bearcat remains.

Africa
-The Wild Dog exhibit looks like it's made zero progress, but the outlining of where the fences will be can be seen.
-I did not see a separate pen for Walter the Warthog.

The zoo has another baby ocleot! The 22nd Zoo Baby of 2013 that was born on November 2nd. Santos, his name, can be found in the nursery.

There was another sifaka born! The 23rd zoo baby and the 13th born in 2013.

The zoo received two new tarantula species that will debut in next year's Zoo Babies.

 

Any further news on the proposed sibling mating attempts for the Sumatran rhinos (Harapan & Suci)? Is it being done or are they still holding off?

 

Sadly this story has remained quiet since August and there are no updates.

 

Any hoofed stock on site for the African Savannah yet?
