I'm very sad to hear about the death of the 2 year old Indian rhino calf in Dubbo this weekend, and it's occurred to me that we (Australia) seem to lose so many rhino calves - of all 3 species that we breed in Australia.

I realise that zoos lose lots of baby animals all the time, but it seems that we lose rhino calves at a disproportionate rate compared to other animals.

What amazes me though, is that we seem to lose them for all sorts of reasons too - there doesn't seem to be any real trend or any commonalities in these deaths.

Are we just really unlucky with this, or are rhino calves particularly vulnerable while young? Is there more we can do?
