I have no idea who elephas maximus is, but, quite frankly, he's\she's talking out of where the sun don't shine. No elephant at Belfast has ever met its maker in the way that he\she stated. Complete and utter nonsense.

Said animal died over a year ago - do you actively search for animals that have died in the past so you can complain about the disposal of their remains? :p

Someone obsessed with dead zoo animals and what has been done to their remains :p

    Sorry for the confusion.
So Jenny died by herself, still it doesn't excuse her total incineration.

And I hope that this zoo never gets a rhino with such attitude to dead megafauna. Neither White, nor Black, nor an amazing One-horned.
Put a realistic rhino sculpture on a lawn and be happy - it doesn't need to be fed, monitored or disposed of.

How else does one dispose of an elephant's body?

The body is given to research facility (university, museum) and then unused soft tissues are returned for disposal.
Skin and skeleton are stored in the collection, as well as some interesting organs (such as eyes, heart or genitalia).
Btw elephant calves are perfect choice for smaller museums. Those cuties are easy to handle, unlike multi-ton adults, and incinerating one is totally pointless.

This is totally pointless and has nothing to do with why Belfast, does not have any type of Rhino! So can you please take your comments about what you think should be done, with animals that have died, and start a thread so that the rest of us don't have to read your twisted thoughts!!!!

Why are my thoughts twisted? Are you blaming all the zoologists then?
Go to the nearest NH museum and demand to bury all the poor animals so they complete a damn circle of life.
I repeat again, if a certain zoo is not going to preserve the megafauna specimens, it should not have a rhino.
Rhinos are too fascinating to be destroyed like puny pets or livestock.

When zoo authorities stop viewing their animals as would-be biohazard waste that is exhibited as long as it's moving, we zoologists won't be upset anymore.
    But this never happens.

With the greatest respect ELephas Maximus you should perhaps think about what you are posting! Where do you get your information from? You mentioned jenny was euthanised when she died naturally! A great number of zoos in the uk do donate certain animal bodies to various museums for research or taxidermy but believe it or not when something like an elephant dies in Northern Ireland it is impractical and on many cases impossible to contact every European museum to see if the want it! One of Belfast's previous elephants skeleton is even exhibited at another Irish zoo! I'm extremely disappointed that you feel you just attack a professional zoological collection with such poor facts!

I already told it was a confusion. Elephants are PTS all over the world...
So how many of Belfast elephants were preserved besides that one?
And why Belfast zoo doesn't want to have an own elephant skeleton/mount on display? Just because they have more than one elephant, so a single specimen is not valuable at all?!
