Political questions about a Scimitar-horned antilope at the Wilhelma ! Local politicans are questioning if it is possible to re-name one of the females.... her name is Isis !
On November 30,"Hannibal"the 50 years old Pygmy hippo, passed away, he was found dead in the morning and was the last of his species in southern germany.
Disagree. Got a start, saw off the new ball, made his half-century and then clearly lost his focus. Should have gone on with it.
Two weeks after"Hanniabls"Homerun, also the 49 years old female Hippo"Rosy"died on Friday, december 16. So only one male Hippo left in the upper level of the Hippo house, and the Wilhelma is now in the same situation like Frankfurt with one older hippo. So hopefully Frankfurt will send his old female to Stuttgart. Indoors, the former pymy hippo stalls could be remodeld for another hippo stall to give the hippos more room, the outdoor pool and the exhibit could ( and should) be also enlarged. So I'm curious, what both Zoos will do. I think, the Wilhelma will not get the permsision to get in a young female to continue breeding in the outdated Hippo house, but I can not imagine it is the intension of them.
And another new species for the Wilhelma : from the Aquarium of the Pacific the Wilhelma recieved the Ribboned pipefish ( Haliichthys taeniophorus ) .
Female babirusa born Jan.8. New Small mammal and birdhosue are due to open in summer, the new exhibit for snowleopards in late autumn. Also lions will return to the zoo; they will be housed in the tiger exhibit. The will be happen after the snowleopard exhibit is finsihed. The male hippo"Mike"will leave the park. Instead of hippos, malayan tapirs will return to the zoo
Forgot to mention but the zoo now has the second largest group of bonobos in Europe following the loss of three of Frankfurt's group. The group at Stuttgart numbers at 17 individuals, beaten only by Vallee des Singes' impressive group of 21.
@FunkyGibbon Not as many as before. According to an interview with the director Thomas Kölpin, the house will be a combintion of animal and plants, mostly carnivour plants. He named Tamandua, Short-eared elephant shrew, Naked-Mole rats, sloths, Bali starling, Raodrunner and pygmy falcons( no specific species) @BenettL. It is not known yet, they hope to open it in Fall. It was not said to which zoo Mike will go, but because he has sired only one calf, he is an important bredding male. So I guess, he will send to a breeding facility with only females.
Does the last paragraph imply that it will not be long before the Wilhelmina will start with renovation or demolishing the building and rebuilding it into an Asian rainforest themed set of exhibits with prime species Malayan tapir and babirusa?
The next big project in the near future will be the elephant house, but they can start construction of it first after the Rosenstein car tunnel near to the park is finished in 2020. After the elephant house is complete, I guess around 2023, the current elephant house will be rebuild for the Indian Rhinos, and I think, after this, the lion house will be remodeled before the present hippo house can be demolished and replaced for a new house for malayan tapirs and babirusa. So it will took a while until then, because they cant't close and rebuild all three buidling-in one row-at the same time... I think, the present hippo house offers enough space for a pair of Malayan Tapirs in the upper level. So the EEP Poluation is growing, they need more holders for this species-last year was the most succesful breeding season ever in europe. So I guess, the EEp coordinator is happy about the plans of the Wilhelma. By the way-altough there is the idea to bring hippos back to the zoo in a new enclosure outside of the park ( nobody knoes, if this is realistic), it s not decided yet, if hippos OR pygmy hippos will return to the Wilhelma, but one of them will do-so it seems.
Stuttgart will receive Asian Lions. Two males (siblings born 2014) will arrive from Mulhouse later this month
Male Common Hippo, Mike is going to move to Dvur Kralove. He will be replaced at Stuttgart by Malayan Tapir Wilhelma in Stuttgart: Letztes Flusspferd verlässt die Wilhelma
