A new zoo is opening next summer in Enterprise, Alabama. Wiregrass Animal Kingdom Zoo currently includes 20 species, with plans to feature up to 70. Article: Wiregrass Animal Kingdom Zoo to open in Enterprise Website: Wiregrass Animal Kingdom, Inc.
A new zoo (in the traditional sense) is a rarity in the United States, even though on average 3 aquariums make their public debut every year. As far as I know, there will now be 9 zoos in the state of Alabama: Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo (Gulf Shores) Alabama Shoals Aquarium & Nature Center (Florence) Birmingham Zoo (Birmingham) Dauphin Island Sea Lab: Estuarium (Dauphin Island) McWane Science Center (Birmingham) Mobile Zoo (Wilmer) Montgomery Zoo (Montgomery) Tigers for Tomorrow (Attalla) Wiregrass Animal Kingdom (Enterprise)
Depending on your definition, these are a few you're missing: Alabama Wildlife Centre (Pelham) George H. Carroll Lion Habitat (Florence) McClelland's Zoo (Banks) Southeastern Raptor Center (Auburn)
This sounds pretty nice. Good rare species as well, for example Is that watusi, addax, baboons and... BLONDE COATIMUNDI!!!! Are these rare? I have never heard of blonde coatimundi, or are they just mountain coatimundi?
Hi pachyderm pro. I haven't come across the term "blonde coatimundi" either, but the animal in the photo is a ring-tailed coati (Nasua nasua).
Thanks for the update. On my master list of approximately 710 "zoos" in the United States (including 135 aquariums) I've never added facilities that are not open to the public and so Southeastern Raptor Center (although available for special presentation dates) might not fit the bill. It was interesting to research the Lion Habitat and even though the establishment consists of a single enclosure and only two lions one could argue that it is indeed a "zoo".
I've located yet another zoo in Alabama (Harmony Park Safari in Huntsville) and the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo is due to open in its new location in early 2017.
So I was looking up the Mobile Zoo as I had never heard of it and was curious. But apparently they have been shut down. Mobile Zoo closes following USDA judge's order
