The zoo had 1.26 million visitors last year, an all-time record. That total was helped considerably by all of the high-profile babies on show: sloth bears, lions, jaguars, small-clawed otters, a giraffe, etc. http://www.zoo.org/document.doc?id=1027

After a 6-month study the zoo has decided to maintain elephants in its long-term plans. The female African elephant Watoto will be moved to another zoo and additional Asian elephants will be brought to Seattle. Also, between $1.5 and $3 million will be spent on numerous upgrades both to the actual exhibit and to interactive elements involving visitors at the zoo. Does anybody know how big (how many acres) the elephant exhibit at WPZ is and how it compares to newer exhibits like the National Zoo and SDZ? Every time I see the elephant exhibit at WPZ it looks rather spacious, but this could be an optical illusion due to the way it is spatially arranged. The New National Zoo exhibit is fantastic! The one at SDZ not so much, given that asian elephants don't live in arid deserts. The exhibit at the Houston Zoo definitely sucks, too. At least the WPZ exhibit gives the impression that it is situated in a "forest" where one would most likely encounter a wild Asian elephant.
Woodland Park's elephant exhibit is just over an acre in size, although the zoo's website and various press releases claim that it is 1.5 acres including the barn and all of the outdoor areas that are accessible to the elephants.
A porcupine baby was recently born and has access to their exhibit but prefers to hang out behind scenes. Xerxes, the new lion, is now on exhibit in the morning while female Adia is on in the afternoon. The pair will be introduced in the coming weeks. The summer 2014 map made its debut this week and it includes the new cheetah exhibit within the "Wildlife Survival Zone". A porcupine icon has been added, no doubt to highlight the recent birth, and the 5 parking lots have all been named for the first time that I can remember. http://www.zoo.org/document.doc?id=1259
Is there more to the zoo than the map suggests? I'm hoping that there are a lot of species missing from the map. Why did they put the Cheetahs there and not in the African section? And they call the individual car parks "stalls"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hilarious.
