When you have to explain the "dog tries to save dying fish" video to your family. Again.

You tell to other people that Orcas are closer-related to dolphins than to true whales, but no one believes.

But dolphins are toothed whales though. So orcas are just both.

But they aren't TRUE whales. No one calls the dolphins whales.

Actually orca's are just a bigger sized dolphin and don't have much in common with whales.

Let's be honest, unless one excludes *all* toothed whales from the category of "true whales" there is no such thing as a monophyletic group of "true whales" :p one might as well point out that the beaked whales don't have much in common with - for instance - the blue whale or the bowhead whale.......

...you see a remark like this and can't stop yourself from openly starting a discussion about what "true whales" actually are?

@jwer LOL so very true! I'm sorry, I really can't help it.
@TeaLovingDave Thank you, yes, exactly what I was getting at. Generally the term "whale" just extends to "cetacean". To some it may seem a silly thing to be specific about, but then again I feel the same way about getting annoyed by people who say an orca is a whale. Technically, they're right! No harm is coming from it, and if anything you can tell them they are in the family delphinidae.

I wasn't allowed to go anywhere until I was two or so, actually. Before then you have the whole infantile amnesia thing going on anyway, so I don't think there was any loss there.

Or you record every single wildlife documentary about South-east Asia, hoping for a Sumatran Rhino, Marbled cat, rare langur or some sort of civet or linsang.

If you say that you want to go to another zoo next month and your parents tell you "isn't one zoo enough?"

If you hope for bengal tigers to be in your local zoo.

You have a dream involving an owl and you try to ID it both within the dream and when you wake up
And then within the dream you remember thinking you have to post it to the Big Year thread!

If you get really annoyed when people call corals plants
If you wish gift shops would sell something new or useful for once

If you know that the term 'animal' does not only include mammals.

-If whenever you see a species that zoos are known to hybridise with another, you immediately check for signs of genetic impurity and try unprofessionally assess it yourself

-When visiting zoos with friends you get frustrated at them stopping forever at the pandas, but then drag them away to watch a vulture for ten minutes

-Your top three Disney movies growing up (if your birth was post 1990) were The Lion King, The Jungle Book, and Tarzan

-Your favourite childhood animal was something 'weird' (like a warthog)

-Every time someone you know says wrong information about an animal, you have to fight the urge to correct them, and if you fail, fight the urge to sound snooty about it

-Each one of your bedroom walls has at least one animal-related thing on it (could include posters, pictures you've taken yourself, maps of your favourite zoos, or even a life-sized cardboard cutout of the panther from the Jungle Book)

-(If you play the game) You enjoy downloading Zoo Tycoon mods and making them into lists more than actually playing the game

Whenever someone asks what your favourite animal is, you reply, then they frown because they have never heard of it before.

If you sometimes have to correct zoo staff/signs
If you get all excited when there is one new bird species in a large aviary
If you get carried away looking at the animals and forget about lunch time
If you get annoyed when zoos label domestic camels as being wild animals
If you look at an empty space in a zoo and think "hmm... they could get a nice new enclosure here"
If you start peeping through fences to see off-show species
