To answer snowleopard's question about drills at the Detroit Zoo - their last male Enwe has arrived in Atlanta, making it the one and only accredited zoo in the country with the species. Enwe, An Endangered Drill, Back At Zoo Atlanta
Are there unaccredited zoos with Drills, or is Atlanta the only zoo with the them in the U.S. period?
As far as I know, it’s the only zoo with them at all in the US. Many zoos tend to stick with “only accredited zoo with x animal” because the US private trade is strange and large, and sometimes those species do show up in it.
I am guessing the Zoo Atlanta is part of the EAZA / EEP program since there is no AZA program (there is an SSP for mandrill). Not sure where your male Enwe comes in terms of relatedness to the rest of the "overseas" population. I seem to remember that some Atlanta stock went to our Continent. Again, sadly this article is a NO READ on our Continent (and a show of some exasperation at the slowness of evolving internet at your end) for Zoochat readers in Europe/EU. I just got another line saying ..: "Hello! Patch is currently unavailable in most European locations. We are working on a technical compliance solution, and hope to be able to provide our local journalism offerings to EU readers soon. —The Patch Team" It is seriously becoming somewhat irritating! I wonder why this is taking so long to get sorted in North America for us overseas readers (since they have known for so bloody long we were concerned about privacy infringements and the failure to get this fixed in the first place)? BTW: I can read this one instead, so got the gist of the above feature. So, it is not all bad, but a good bit we sadly cannot read with you all right now. New article out about the zoos new African savanna expansion. Contains art and designs showing the exhibit apperance. A highlight is that the zoo will be able to keep as many as six elephants in their new exhibit, including bulls. The article also mentions the addition of white rhinos to the zoo: Zoo Atlanta’s expansion brings African Savanna to Atlanta
The old plan for the old elephant exhibit was Black Rhino, which the zoo previously held. The exhibit seems to be better suited for that species, so this seems like a strange decision, considering I can only see this exhibit fitting 2 non-breeding white rhinos at max.
