Yeah, i know a new thread with no news, go on blindfold and bind me and call for the firing squad, but i though this would be of interest. https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=10154808159567557
The video shows the gharials in the aquarium at Berlin Zoo. I'm pleased that the zoo is advertising them. When I visited Prague Zoo there were several sign posts towards the 'Gaviale'.
According to ZTL, the only other crocodilians at Berlin Zoo are smooth-fronted and spectacled caimans. There are several species at Berlin Tierpark.
Inventory at the Zoo and the Aquarium : 1363 species and 19442 specimens ! ( article - also about the inventory at the Tierpark - in German ) : Tierisch gute Nummer
Accidentally posted in the Tierpark thread, but the question was for here: what has the zoo's success with Andean and puna (James) flamingo been, recently or historically? Any recent breeding (or even attempts)?
I believe that both species are sporadically breeding at the collection, with the most recent successful attempts being 2013 (Andean) and 2014 (Puna) to the best of my recollection.
The Giant Panda's for Berlin have been identified as female, Meng Meng and male, Jiao Qing. They are currently scheduled to arrive in June
The Chinese are unhappy and want some serious structural adjustment, f.i. according to them the indoor is only half what they claim the new standards 150m2 prescribe. Expect a few hiccups ...
Additionally some of the glass panels are several centimeters too low . They updated their panda guidelines in March, when this enclosure was already under construction, but they still want it their way....
That IS the Chinese, and allthough the BZ director seems to think it is all surmountable as updates after agreement / conclusion on exhibit specs, they - at Berlin Zoo - will have to make structural adjustments .... Otherwise, no pandas!!! I am a bit concerned they might not be able to make the July deadline for the P.R. Chinese state visit to Berlin which would coincide with the exhibit's opening ceremony.
