What a shame. He was really showing his age these last few years though. R.I.P.

It's ironic that this is listed here under "Small news", as I think it qualifies as very big news. Europe is now back to only 4 zoos with these biggest "rock stars" in the zoo world.

And I think it's the death of the last Panda outside of China that wasn't officially owned by China anymore (but was gifted).

What about the pandas in Mexico City? Are they owned by China?

OK, to answer my own question, I just looked it up. According to Welcome to www.giantpandazoo.com :
"Chapultepec Zoo has 3 giant pandas:
Xiu Hua, Shuan Shuan & Xin Xin

Xiu Hua was born on June 25, 1985, Shuan Shuan on June 15, 1987 & Xin Xin on July 1, 1990.
They all were born at the Chapultepec Zoo and are owned by Mexico"

Goodness, the site says that 8 giant pandas have been born at the Chapultepec Zoo! I've seen this exhibit and it's not the best, but it does offer great viewing opportunities of the pandas.

Of course, I'd be amazed if this state of affairs lasted too long.

Does anybody have news of how the bird house is progressing? Is there a definite opening date yet? Is the structure of the house completed yet? Have birds started moving in again?

A few months ago I was told that they're hoping to open it in December, but I don't know if they've managed to arrange an official opening date yet.

The chapultepec panda family tree is posted on the chapultepec zoo gallery. The panda exhibit has been nicely refurbished recently. Remember that the london zoo panda Chia Chia was sent to Chapultepec where he mated with tohui and sired xin xin. yet ZSL never asked for even a temporary loan of the animal, which is the youngest of the chapultepec pandas, but already in her mid twenties. Various english zoochaters mention interest in xin xin in comments on her picture in the chapultepec gallery.

@TeaLovingDave: I don't think Berlin will have new Pandas very soon.

@SootyMangabey: The semi-official date is December. So far it seems like the works progress as expected. The core-building looks virtually finished from the outside. They now basically have to add structures inside and around ("loops") and then design the individual halls and enclosures. I believe they already brought tons of sand inside and some rather large rocks have been inside the growing building all along as they wouldn't have fit through the doors afterwards. Apparently, there will be artificial rocks as well though and some of the plants are ready to be put in. I'm very curious as to the final result. I quite liked the old bird house, but this one will be far larger and more state-of-the-art. It also will include a large breeding centre behind the scenes. Even though Berlin zoo doesn't have a Gondwana, it has several rather smashing buildings (hippos, nocturnal animals, aquarium...) and soon the bird house undoubtedly will be among the best ones. I'm also curious about the plans for the carnivore building. Modernisation is to start in 2013, I believe. With the monkey and ape building just being modernized, the zoo remains at a high pace - without any debts. I only wish the same was true for the Tierpark...

2 Rusty spotted cats have been born at the zoo, the first in it's history.

Excellent news on the rusty spotted cats!:D, shame about bao bao though, have the berlin zoo made any announcements on what they plan on doing with the enclosure, or whether they will try an obtain another Panda, even on a temprary basis?
