Does anyone have any memories of the chimp shows about 50 years ago? My dad was a chimp trainer at the Detroit Zoo in the 1940s and 50s. Author Shawn Thompson wrote about our family and the chimps in his blog, the intimate ape: A daughter's dark tale of abuse at the zoo chimp show: how kids and apes suffer together. The reaction was so supportive, I've decided to start my own blog, Chimp Trainer's Daughter. I would love to write about the range of issues these shows raised, and how the zoo experience back then contributes to our understanding of great ape welfare. Please share your stories!
