Male asian elphant born in the night to saturday to first time mother"Rani"and first time daddy "Voi Nam".

A baby elephant was born again at Leipzig Zoo. Elephant cow Rani gave birth to a small bull on Saturday night. As the zoo announced on Sunday, labor will start late Friday evening. The young animal was already there an hour after midnight. "The birth was uncomplicated and quick for a first birth," said zoo veterinarian Andreas Bernhard. The "little one" weighs a proud 140 kilograms and, according to the zoo, makes a healthy impression.

"On the first day, Rani accepted her new role very well, even though she is actually a very scared elephant. The little one has the luxury of two cows taking care of him perfectly". Thomas Günther Head of Zoo Leipzig

Since it was the first birth of Rani, she initially received support from the carers and from elephant cow Don Chung. Later she took care of her youngsters on her own. Now the elephants should be given time to "get used to the new situation", said zoo director Jörg Junhold. At first he was relieved that the birth had been successful.

The whole group with all bipeds and four-legged friends did a great job". Jörg Junhold Zoo Director

The father of the baby elephant is Voi Nam, who was also born in Leipzig. The 17-year-old bull has now become a father for the first time, according to the zoo. He had covered Rani in April 2018. The gestation period was 638 days. When the visitors can see the little elephant is still unclear. The cub must now drink regularly and be stable. Depending on the mother-child bond, the zoo wants to decide from day to day when we will reopen the elephant house, "said Junhold.

Great! Although I was a little hoping to will be a female. Rani has already had some experience in raising Ben Long and therefore probably knows how to care for the calf. The advantage is also help from Don Chung. I wish calf all the best.

What kind of exhibit is this? (Sorry I don't know German and don't know what Feuer means; I can guess what land means).

"Feuer" means "fire." According to this video that came up when I Googled "Zoo Leipzig Feurland," it looks like a Tierra del Fuego exhibit with penguins and sea lions.

@iluvwhales Thanks for that. Fireland is an odd name for an exhibit with creatures in water! Yes I know it comes from the Spanish name for the region, but how many people will get that? It would make more sense if they just used the Spanish name Tierra del Fuego for the exhibit. Here in the USA I am virtually certain any zoo would do that and no one would translate it to English Fireland.

Feuerland cannot be translated literally. It is a regular term for Tierra del Fuego. Aside remember Anglo-Saxon is not the be and end all language-wise and here is a prime example of how not to go for the usual trappings.....

A number of languages do indeed translate Tierra del Fuego literally.
