The individual from the original pair with the injured leg was missing at my last visit, ten days ago.
It is hard to say, but the both individuals I observed got quite good together, so it's highly possible to be the new pair.
The one with the injured leg was one of the new pair, actually - from memory I believe this individual is indeed one of the two deceased animals. No idea which the other loss was, however.
Two Black-and-rufous elephant shrews were born (first time in Germany), unfortunately the dam died, but both babies are doing fine.
Male Black rhino SUDAN (*2017 to NDUGU and SABAH) will travel to Twycross during the next weeks to breed with NANDI (*1999 at Leipzig Zoo to JASPER and LIPSI). The are unrelated.
The elephant group consisting of KEWA, ASTRA, THUZA, PANTHA and EDGAR will arrive in Leipzig from Berlin Tierpark soon. The cows will stay there. NAING THEIN is going to travel to Copenhagen, SAIDA will stay in Leipzig until the zoo finds a place for retirement with other older elephant cows in future.
Has Nandi bred previously? She is already 21 so by the time the male matures she will be getting on in years. If never bred previously or for a long period, sounds a poor bet.
Elephant bull NAING THEIN is already on his way to Copenhagen, the group from Berlin Tierpark ia going to arrive in september yet.
Elephants KEWA (*1980 in Myanmar), her son EDGAR (*2016) and daughter PANTHA (*2012) already arrived in Leipzig. Her daughter THUZA (*2008) and her friend ASTRA (*1980 in Vietnam) will follow, propably tomorrow.
I wish the Leipzig Zoo staff and management all the best and success in this endeavour after so many trials and tribulations with the original Myanmar group. I would be nice to see the new females breed with the resident elephant bull Voi Nam soon(ish)!
