On the 8th of November a dead new-born male Drill (Mandrillus leucophaeus) was found in the enclosure, the was the first young for the 8-year old female Traceuse. Recently the golden cats (mother and two young) returned to the Großkatzenhaus. Sad news from Wuppertal on the 20th of November male South African elephant (Loxodonta africana africana) Tsavo (*06.03.2020) was euthanised. His health condition deteriotated rapidly within a week, while he showed a lot of signs of EEHV this could not be determined as the cause of his sudden illness. Recently a pair of Michie's tufted deer (Elaphodus cephalophus michianus) arrived from Diergaarde Blijdorp, this is a new species for Wuppertal and they will soon live together with the red pandas. The results of the examination of the cause of death of African elephant Tsavo have come in, he suffered from a Tetanus infection. Recently 2 female Mishmi takins (Budorcas taxicolor taxicolor) arrived from Zoo Antwerpen and can be found in their new enclosure. Recently 2 Elliptical-eye skinks (Egernia striolata) were born. On the 15th of November 2 Luzon bleeding-hearts (Gallicolumba luzonica) hatched, sadly one of the young passed away 2 weeks later. On the 30th of January male Asian golden cat (Catopuma temminckii) Koshi was send to Zoo Heidelberg. He was born at Zoo Wuppertal last year, leaving the zoo with one adult female and one young female. In Zoo Heidelberg he will live together with a female Tibetan golden cat (Catopuma temminckii tristis).\ Between the 27th and 29th of January 3 Green keel-bellied lizards (Gastropholis prasina) hatched. The last bonobo has left the collection. Their enclosure will be used by the red river hogs. Damit endet die Haltung von Östlichen Bongos im Grünen Zoo Wuppertal. "Nyeri" wurde am 8. Juni 2008 im Zoo Berlin geboren und lebte seit dem 20. September 2009 im Grünen Zoo Wuppertal. Hier zog sie insgesamt vier Jungtiere auf. Im @serengetiparkhodenhagen wird "Nyeri" mit weiteren Bongos sowie Großen Kudus, Impalas, Sitatungas und Kranichen zusammenleben. Der Grüne Zoo Wuppertal hat sich aus Tierwohlgründen für die Beendigung der Bongo-Haltung entschieden, da die Anlage nicht mehr den Ansprüchen an eine tiergerechte und moderne Zootierhaltung entspricht. Von dem freiwerdenden Platz werden zukünftig die Pinselohrschweine profitieren, deren Anlage mit der ehemaligen Bongo-Anlage verbunden und somit deutlich vergrößert werden soll. Yes Wuppertal intends to keep Bonobos in their collection. In time they will loose the Orangutans and Gorillas in favor of Bonobos. It Is indeed Bongo's that left the collection.
A few days ago 4 Siberian ibexes (Capra sibirica) that were born in the zoo last year were send to Zoo Veszprem. Oh sorry, I had not realized that the quote somehow was not include. In regards of phasing out the gorilla and orang utans.
I got this information talking to a keeper when I visited in 2022 . As well as some sources in the Bonobo EEP confirmed that Wuppertal is committed to remain a holder of Bonobos. But as always these are plans that are long term and not publicly written down so this might change. So I would say take it with a grain of salt you never know how the future will pan out. But I thought it was fun to share.
