Saw a species I was afraid I would miss out on this year while driving from Agadir to Marrakesh:

13/07/2019 (Somewhere near Autoroute A7, Morocco)
    BIRDS:
115 - White stork, Ciconia ciconia

And now I'm in Madrid and although I don't have much time to bird at all, a quick stop by El Parque Retiro yesterday gave me a great batch of local species including my second and third ever woodpecker species!

    14/07/2019
    BIRDS:

(Plaza de Tirso de Molina, Madrid)
116 - Common swift, Apus apus

(Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales, Madrid)
117 - Monk parakeet, Myiopsitta monachus
118 - European robin, Erithacus rubecula

    (Parque de El Retiro, Madrid)
    119 - Short-toed treecreeper, Certhia brachydactyla
120 - Great spotted woodpecker, Dendrocopos major
121 - Iberian green woodpecker, Picus sharpei
122 - Stock dove, Columba oenas

Panama (and probably the rest of Latin America) is fantastic, and resplendent quetzals definitely deserve all the hype they receive! I don't think I'll get away with not making a thread about this trip, so expect that some time in the near future!

Just in case you want to follow these splits, the Panama White-faced Capuchin is Cebus imitator (split from what is now called the Colombian White-faced Capuchin C. capucinus).

Less-followed are the Dwarf Squirrel splits. In this case M. alfari only comes as far down the isthmus as southwest Panama, then M. boquetensis is in the highlands, and M. venustulus is from central Panama, including around the Panama Canal area.

I had heard of both splits, yeah (I saw the squirrels in Boquete so they will be boquetensis if you split them on the mammal year list), but I havent been able to read up on them much so I decided to go with the "general" species for now - as I also did with the Azuero howlers, which are often split as a subspecies of Coiba Island howler. It doesn't matter that much for my list either way, I only saw the three species in one place each so my totals won't change if I do accept the splits. I did hear howlers in many other places, but unfortunately only saw them in Azuero.

Thanks for the heads-up, though! I'm generally quite well up to date with bird splits (following a specific list like IOC helps a lot with that) but herps and mammals are a lot harder to be consistent with as there's not really good lists of either, to my knowledge. So far I've always followed what observation.org does with them, as that's where I upload my sightings.

I'm sorry. :p I promise this is my last trip for the year though, so the rest of my year list will have to be from Europe!

If you saw the squirrel in Boquete and you're not splitting it as M. boquetensis, then it would be the Western Dwarf Squirrel M. mimulus and not M. alfari. In Panama mimulus is the highland species and alfari is the lowland species. But in the east of the range (Darien to Colombia) mimulus is a lowland species. That's part of the reason boquetensis gets split from mimulus, because it is well-separated in range from the rest of the population and has a different ecology.
