Was trying to think of which European zoos still hold both elephant species since Tierpark Berlin stopped and could only think of Pairi Daiza. Was curious to know if there is any more and how common this is in other parts of the world? I would be even more curious to know how many places still keep both species together instead of separately.

Although I have never visited, I am aware that Sosto Zoo in Hungary houses both species.

I’m pretty sure San Diego has both African and Asian elephants

Please can the title be changed?

There are 3 species of extant elephants and several species of extinct elephants

    This.

While Asa does not have Asian elephants they still have two species.

Addventure World at Wakayama and Tama Zoo have Asian and African elephants. Higashiyama zoo had Asian and African elephants until their last African elephant passed on a couple years ago.

As far as historical keeping of African + Asian comes to mind ... one obvious example was Duchess and Gay of Paignton

San Diego Zoo has 2.0 African elephants and 0.3 Asian elephants; while the San Diego Zoo Safari Park holds 1.7 African elephant.

    ————————

The Australasian region no longer holds African elephants, but when the last one died in 2017, it was housed at Taronga Western Plains Zoo that housed Asian elephants and continues to do so to this day.

Historically speaking, Auckland Zoo has also held both with a three year old African elephant joining their female Asian elephant in 1983. Sadly the calf died the year she arrived and was replaced by an Asian elephant in 1990.

Skopje Zoo in North Macedonia is another European zoo currently with African and Asian elephants, with one individual of both species who were from Pairi Daiza originally.

Other zoos not mentioned in this thread so far include Zoo Miami (2 Africans and 3 Asians), and Topeka Zoo (1 African and 1 Asian).

I'm aware but it really isn't that relevant to the thread considering African forest elephants have seldom been kept in captivity (and only in a very limited number of places currently) and extinct ones are well... extinct. I don't see what a change in thread name would achieve here. :p

I've slightly amended the title to read "genera" in order to sate the pedantry :p

Louisville holds 1.1 African Elephant and 0.1 Asian Elephant together. The two females (Mikki and Punch were companions for a long time, before Mikki was artificially inseminated to produce her son, Fitz in 2019.

    Yeah here's their current herd:

    African
    1.0 Inhlonipho (2011)
    1.0 Tsandzikle (2010)
    0.1 Shaba (1980)

    Asian
    0.1 Mary (1964)
    0.1 Devi (1967)

The three girls live together. Mary and Shaba are quite close.

San Diego, Miami, Louisville and Topeka are the only American collection which still hold both Asian and African elephants. Miami is the only one that houses them separately.

As an interesting side-note, the Zoo Berlin guidebook from 1926 which I have just reviewed within my ongoing thread elsewhere on the forum contains photographs of all three extant species of elephant:

There’s been talking on the forum of them taking on other senior aged cows in the future, but in my opinion they’re better off acting in support of the African elephant herd at the Safari Park.

Lincoln Park Zoo's Large Mammal House famously held African and Asian elephants together in the nineties; when the building was closed for renovation into African Journey, Lincoln Park chose to focus on the African species. I believe there is publicly available video footage out there of the two elephants playing.
