the way the planet is warming atm, polar bears might find themselves back in australian zoos. lets hope it doesnt reach an all hands on deck stage
Pusung was bred at Perth Zoo(Atjeh x Puan) so if your Singapore male is Pusung's son, he's also related to the Perth group, the main one in Australia. Better for him to go to Europe where the Perth animals are only represented in one group- at Chester UK.
Monarto have two lion cubs under wraps, born about 2 weeks ago, while a second lioness is displaying a big belly. The first lioness and cubs are in the new cubbing dens. Lets hope both litters survive for these first time mothers.
Don't know exactly. However, the males are brothers from Mogo (Leroy and Levi) while their are three lionesses from NZ and the fourth from Adelaide born Jan 04. All Lionesses are about the same age, while I think the boys are maybe 2 years older. I'm not sure which of the two lionesses were on contraception and which two were not, but they only planned to breed two first up. They want to build a pride of about 15 cats.
Levi is the father. the exhbit is big enough to have 2 prides, the hyena are now on display btw, will post pics soon
Excellent updates Ben! I get some of the info, but don't make my way round all the zoo very often. I'll add relevant primate info when I can as well.
just been looking at the south australian zoo's web site. The chimp plans for Monarto are impressive. With that and the pandas it looks like S.A zoos are going forward at a great rate.
yeah they are, the chimps have been moved out back of the vets, JO maybe you could let people know hwta you are setting up back there in the quarantine area. Now the old ape area can be demolished for the enrivodome!
theres 1.2 The male is going to Hamilton Zoo and 3 boys come to MOnarto, so there will be 3.2 they intend to have 12 animals in the group ^from zoo times
The male, Totsie looks like he will be staying put for a while, the move to Hamilton is in doubt for him. We are in the process of setting up CCTV in the area that the chimps are currently housed in so we can monitor them and complete some more research projects. I can tell you that they seem to be quite happy in quarantine, they have air con and spend their time relaxing in the cool, as we are having some every hot days. I'll be supervising and enrichment assessment that starts shortly so they'll be getting even more enrichment that they have been since moving.
thanks jo! wow! zoosSA with a half decent website! dear god! look massive, looks great, the sort of standards that really need to be set for keeping apes in my opinion. its a nice woodland patch, not unlike the sorts of woodlands chimps live in in africa. the gardener in me would have an absolutel ball if given an opportunity to "africanize" that landscape. i like the idea of chimp colonies on the open range.
Innovative website with a bit of a chuckle. It looks great and the plans for the chimps are great. I look forward to seeing this great exhibit opened.
Adelaide Zoo and Monarto Zoo. Australian Panda home. The 4 female chimps have arrived an are being quarantined at Adelaide Zoo and then being sent over to Monarto to join the 4 males already there
