The new info board for the red crowned cranes now calls them Japanese cranes and the ostriches had been moved to the enclosure by the new sewage works when we visited on Friday.
Ah my bad, is red crowned crane not correct then? Maybe the Wattled Cranes could be in the old moose enclosure opposite the hunting dogs?
Red crowned crane is not incorrect; it's one of several names used for the species. I don't like that name personally as several other crane species have red coloured heads so it seems illogical to single one species out as red-crowned.... Anyway, I still always think of the species as Manchurian crane.
Was at whipsnade last week and Alex the sealion keeper actually said the two older male sealions Hanno and Oakley should have moved on to other collections by now, but their isn’t any collection which is good enough to have them, so until they find somewhere they are staying... As it’s them plus Lara and bailey and Dominic and now the newest sealion Maui so a few individuals for quite a small enclosure x
I too, still call them Manchurian. Anything 'crowned' implies a connection with actual Crowned Cranes, a very different genus. 'Japanese' Crane, sometimes used, actually works quite well, as I'm pretty sure they're the only crane species that breeds in the islands, although others over-winter there.
Wow. Nowhere does sealions as well ad Whipsnade? what an astonishing statement by Alex the sealion keeper
I think you are parsing the sentence wrong; it should be read as implying that of the collections available none are as good as Whipsnade, not all collections worldwide. Incidentally though I do share your apparent lack of enthusiasm for the sealion exhibit.
I think it might be more a case of bull Sealions being hard to place? Incidentally, I always enjoy the Sealions in the lake at Longleat, which must be the best catered for captive Pinnipeds in the UK.
I'd agree on these, having seen them both in the last year. In fact other than Blackpool and Colchester I'm struggling to think of any Sealion exhibits in the UK that are particularly good at all!
Probably not much better in size for the animals than Whipsnade even though it's more attractive to the visitors, likewise Living Coasts ( though these are both for fur seals). Banham, Welsh Mountain certainly no better than Whipsnade either.
