'Ornis' (off-show breeding) center for endangered (bird) species now finished: Artenschutzzentrum Ornis fertiggestellt | Zoo Zürich (scroll down for images and short video)
Fantastic news ! I hope more and more zoos will go in this direction and take their part in breeding endangered species in real good conditions.
It would be also nice if zoos would strive to show all species kept at the instritution to visitors instead to keep the rarer ones only backstage. Creation of such centers like Ornis might nudge zoos into such heading. Zoos exist after all to showcast live animals to masses, ideally in full repertoire of their natural behaviour (if at all possible in captivity).
I agree with you, but I think it would be ideal if a zoo would keep a few individuals of a rare species on show and the rest of the breeding group behind the scenes. This way a zoo could show rare and endangered species to the public, giving zoos not only the opportunity to tell the visitors the need to conserve these species but also how the zoo is participating in the conservation of that species.
Indeed. I was going to post the very same thing. I think Cologne's plan for a bird breeding centre, for example, does include several on-show enclosures.
