Whaaaat!? I love surprises! Here's an article I just found for this news: They’re caracal-ing for our help I've also now started a thread about it here: Caracals back in Australia! The last Caracal in Australia was at Melbourne Zoo in 2013.
Wild Animal Encounters has just finished construction of a cheetah facility. Havent arrived yet but shouldnt be too far off.
Tasmania Zoo now has Servals, with three (2.1) arriving from the National Zoo in Canberra last week. Tasmania Zoo welcomes three new serval cats | Photos, video
They may have been moved to another paddock due to the birth of two Zebra in that yard they were sharing with part of the Zebra herd!
Currumbin has a brand new "exotic precinct" called Lost Valley which includes several mammal species not previously kept at the zoo, including Ring-tailed Lemur, Cottontop Tamarin, Red Panda, and Capybara (as well as Goodfellow's Tree Kangaroo which they already had). See this thread for information: Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary - Lost Valley development
I actually just tried to look on their Facebook page earlier today (when I posted the above about Currumbin) to see if they had Cheetah yet - but Facebook now does that thing where you need to log in to see anything and I don't Facebook.
A couple of additions from the news threads: Wildlife HQ now has African Hunting Dogs, with eight males arriving from Altina. Symbio now has a pair of Golden Lion Tamarins (I don't know from where).
I only joined Facebook to look at zoo pages and a few specialists sites. But having joined I don't find I have to 'log in' further to access any of the zoo ones or the others either. A few(not the zoo ones) are 'closed' sites you have to apply to join but once you are 'in' you are able to access them without further log-in, or I can anyway.
Most (all?) zoo sites are open-access so anyone can view them even if they aren't on Facebook (like me). Usually there is a banner which covers the page when you open it, but if you click "not now" where it says to sign in, the banner moves down the page. It's still there but only covers the bottom of the page. However, on that day the whole page was covered by a log-in screen and there's no way to get rid of it. They do that occasionally, and it is really annoying, but today it is back to "normal" so I can see zoo sites.
Most captive bat spp tend to be flying foxes, which Aust has plentiful supply of. Why import a spp that looks roughly the same? The fact that Ghost bats (a 'microbat'; admittedly a large microbat) appear to do well in captivity, is a bonus for visitors to Aust zoos.
Darling Downs Zoo has imported three pairs of Red-handed Tamarins (Saguinus midas), one pair of which will be going to the Hunter Valley Zoo. These are the only Red-handed Tamarins in Australia. Darling Downs Zoo Exciting new arrivals at Darling Downs Zoo
And now (from their Facebook page) two more Cheetahs, a pair of sisters named Ziva and Zane from South Africa. The other Cheetah they have is also a female from South Africa, named Blanca.
I'm not sure if they are purebred, but I do believe their may still be a few Sika deer left in Victorian deer farms.
