I don't know if this thread is too similiar to how well certain species do in captivity, but I wanted to know, what kind of species, that is present in captivity, but is very challenging to keep. Wether because of only certain diet options, requires huge amount of space, or have challenging social needs. Fyi, this isn't about wether this species is possible to keep in captivity or not. This is about animals that are possible to keep in captivity, but is very challenging to keep. They can be popular ABC animals or some obscure ones. For example: 1. Elephants: Needs lots of space, needs more than one/two animals in one exhibit, needs massive amount of foods, can be very aggresive and unpredictable, susceptible to certain diseases (such as foot disease or respiratory disease), and generally don't live too long in captivity. But is defitinely a really popular animal among zoo guests. Also pretty controversial due to animal rights organizations have opposed keeping elephants in captivity. 2. Koalas: Simply due to the fact they only eat eucalyptus leaves, and needs tons of them everyday. And since eucalyptus are only found on Australia, zoos outside Australia that doesn't have any access to fresh leaves (either by eucalyptus farms or weekly export) will certainly unable to keep these animals. And it also doesn't help the fact that Australia had banned exporting Koalas since 1960s. 3. Orcas: Shouldn't be a surprise. Lots of space requirements, needs at least a pod of them in one tank, susceptible to stressful behaviors, and generally doesn't live long compared to their wild counterparts. Not helping the fact that this is defitinely one of the most controversial animals to keep, ever since Blackfish documentary has released. Any more examples?
