Does anyone have pictures of the LA Zoo entrance that was torn down in 2002? And do you know if the exit was like those rotating doors, but made out of bars? I'd like to know if my memories from before the new entrance are good. I've also noticed that the entrance built in 1966 was completely different. When was that one taken out?
I don't remember a rotating bar exit. Strangely my memory of the pre-2002 entrance has been mostly erased. Blackduiker would be the person to ask about the history of the zoo entrance as he has been going to the LA Zoo since it opened in 1966. Here is a picture from Blackduiker of the zoo entrance in 1977: http://www.zoochat.com/578/original-zoo-entrance-circa-1977-78-a-256313/
Some seasons of Three's Company opening credits had a shot of them standing in front of the old entrance. YouTube does not seem to have that one available, but it has the later season opening credits where the cast is walking around the zoo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j95PL1SlRxU
Also this vintage news reel begins with a nice aerial shot of the original entrance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUDmtaCmn30
